Makalu Base Camp Trek is an off the beaten track that encloses some of the best that Nepal has to offer – peaceful paths, terraced fields, rhododendron forests, vibrant rural cultures, rare wildlife and many peaks above 8000 meters. For experienced trekkers who love a challenge, this is a great trek with plenty of rewards.

Mt. Makalu is the fifth-tallest mountain on the Earth (8485m), yet the trek to its base camp is a less-visited route due to its relative remoteness. However, it is accessible since there are daily buses to the trailhead and flights to Tumlingtar (which is a few hours’ drive from the trailhead) and simple lodges along the trail.

The Makalu Base Camp trek is ideal for nature-loving trekkers who wish to experience a variety of landscapes, vibrant culture, as well as unusual views of the four towing peaks, including Everest.

The trek starts in Num, inhabited by the Rai people, an ethnic group that predominantly lives in the hilly region of eastern Nepal. As you head up the trail, you’ll pass through upsoiled forests that turn spectacular in spring when rhododendron flowers bloom in shocking red, white, purple and pink, and lead into Nepal’s pristine forest and alpine grassland.

In the mountains, as you cross the Barun River Valley, you will see steep cliffs, glaciers and spectacular waterfalls.    Day 1Fly to Tumlingtar, drive to Tashigaon (2,100 m)

   A short mountain flight from Kathmandu, then a long jeep ride along the Arun Valley to Tashigaon, the last Sherpa village on the route.

   Day 2Tashigaon to Khongma Danda (3,500 m)

   A steep climb through rhododendron and oak forest, with the first big mountain views opening up near camp.

   Day 3Khongma Danda to Dobate (3,650 m) via Shipton La and Keke La

   The toughest crossing of the trek, over two high passes around 4,200 m, with views of Makalu, Kanchenjunga, and alpine lakes like Kalo Pokhari.

   Day 4Dobate to Yangri Kharka (3,560 m)

   A descent into the Barun Valley, following the river past waterfalls, cliffs, and yak pastures.

5. Day 5Yangri Kharka to Langmale Kharka (4,410 m)

   The valley widens into open alpine terrain, and the surrounding peaks get closer and more dramatic.
